Advocacy and Legislative |
Welcome to the NYASP Legislative Resource Page. |
NYASP advocates for the field of school psychology throughout the course of the year by promoting and protecting the role of the school psychologist, the students we work with, and all aspects of our work in schools. On behalf of NYASP, legislative representative Pamela Madeiros monitored hundreds of bills covering issues such as early intervention, educational programming, mental health services, as well as bills governing professional practice. NYASP has actively advocated for the School Psychology Licensure bill S.3036 (Brouk) / A.2033 (Rosenthal) and A.5019 (Gonzalez-Rojas) / S.1969 (Jackson): which requires a school mental health service provider (certified school psychologist or licensed/certified school social worker) working outside the special education department in every school district. School Psychologists as Advocates School psychologists advocate every day for what is best for students. We can also be powerful advocates for the profession by establishing contacts and relationships with our legislators. As experts in both psychology and education, we are well suited to advocate for mental health services, educational programming, and professional practice.
